Job summary
Build the nursing and clinical teams that will change how primary care is delivered in your Brighton community.
This isn’t a role for someone looking to simply step into an established team and maintain the status quo.
We’re looking for a Lead Nurse / Advanced Practitioner with a builder’s mindset – someone who enjoys creating, improving and leading through change, and who is excited by the opportunity to help shape what a great primary care team looks like from the ground up.
Over the last two years, we’ve been on a significant transformation journey across our Brighton practices. We’ve made substantial changes to how we work, strengthened our clinical and operational approach and are now bringing our Sussex practices much closer together, enabling teams to share expertise, resources and support.
We’re now taking the next step
Allied Medical Practice and Ship Street Surgery are coming together as one group, with plans to move into purpose-built practices next year. This will give us the capacity and infrastructure to significantly grow our patient population and build a modern primary care service for the future.

The role
As Lead Nurse / Advanced Practitioner, you’ll combine advanced clinical practice with visible, hands-on leadership.
You’ll be responsible for developing our nursing and healthcare assistant workforce, establishing high clinical standards and creating a culture where people are supported to learn, improve and deliver excellent patient care.
You’ll work closely with Practice Managers, Clinical Leads and the wider multidisciplinary team to turn our ambitions into reality.
There is already a significant amount of good work happening – but we’re not finished.
We’re ambitious about where these practices can go, and we’re looking for someone who is equally ambitious about what they can build.
You won’t be joining simply to inherit a finished model. You’ll have the opportunity to help shape it.
Responsibilities
What you’ll focus on
Building and developing the clinical team
You’ll provide leadership, coaching and mentorship to Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants, helping to establish a strong, capable and confident clinical workforce.
You’ll have a particularly important role in building team capability and culture, creating clear expectations and supporting colleagues to develop.
Setting the clinical standard
You’ll provide advanced clinical assessment and care while acting as a visible role model for clinical excellence.
You’ll help establish consistent standards of practice, ensuring patients receive safe, effective and evidence-based care.
Driving quality and governance
You’ll play a key role in strengthening clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and compliance.
You’ll be comfortable identifying where things need to improve – and, importantly, you’ll enjoy working out how to make those improvements happen.
Leading change
Change is a significant part of this role.
You’ll help implement new ways of working, develop clinical pathways and bring colleagues with you as we continue to evolve the service
We’re looking for someone who can stay positive and focused when things are changing, adapt quickly and keep the bigger picture in mind.
Developing people
You’ll create opportunities for colleagues to learn, grow and take ownership of their professional development.
Through coaching, mentoring, one-to-ones and development plans, you’ll help build a team that is confident, accountable and proud of the care it provides.
Improving the service
You’ll work with clinical and operational colleagues to identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes, access, preventative care and the overall patient experience.
You’ll be encouraged to challenge existing ways of working and bring forward brave ideas about how we can do things better.
Working as one team
Our Brighton practices are increasingly connected to our wider IC24 primary care network across Sussex.
You’ll have access to colleagues, expertise and support across our other practices, giving you the opportunity to learn from what works elsewhere and share your own ideas and successes.
Requirements
This is a role for a builder

If you need a completely established team, fixed processes and a service that simply needs maintaining, this probably isn’t the role for you.
But if the idea of building something from the ground up, developing a team and seeing your impact translate directly into better patient care excites you, we’d love to hear from you.
What we’re looking for
You’ll need
First Level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
Non-Medical Prescribing qualification
Experience working within General Practice, Primary Care or Urgent Care
Strong clinical leadership and decision-making skills
Experience supporting, mentoring or managing clinical teams
Understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement and audit
A genuine interest in developing people and building high-performing teams
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
The resilience, adaptability and confidence to lead through change
A proactive, organised and continuous-improvement mindset
We’re particularly interested in people who have built or transformed teams, services or ways of working – whether that’s within primary care, urgent care or another complex healthcare environment.
Most importantly, you’ll care deeply about patients, have high clinical standards and genuinely enjoy helping people and services become better.
