Job summary
We are seeking a salaried GP to cover a six month absence. We are happy to discuss both temporary and permanent positions.
Ideally, the GP would work six sessions a week across three days, but we are happy to discuss this.
We are situated in central Chichester.
Main duties of the job
Appointments
We work to the BMA safe working standards. The standard clinic is 13 patients in the morning and 12 patients in the afternoon. 15 minute appointments.
You will take a fair share of Duty Doctor sessions. As Duty Doctor, you work the whole day either as the Triaging GP, or the Duty Doctor, but you work as a team and cross cover. Duty clinics are supported by a paramedic and an ANP.
Visits
The majority of visits will be covered by our paramedic but there will be times when you will need to visit patients. During periods of annual or sickness leave we would expect some flexibility to help cover the visits required.
Paperwork
You will be responsible for the filing of your own requested investigations for your patients. If GPs are on leave, you may receive some of theirs in rotation to deal with. Workload is capped.
Patient letters are workflowed, and only passed to the named GP when there is a task for them to complete.
Prescriptions are signed by the Duty team
Supervision of other clinicians
When you are the Duty Doctor, you will be supporting the nurse team and the non-medical prescribing team. Supervision capacity is built into your workload.
Responsibilities
Job summary
A salaried GP works as an autonomous practitioner, responsible for the provision of medical services to the practice population, delivering an excellent standard of clinical care while complying with the contract.
Furthermore, the post-holder will adhere to the GMC standards for good medical practice, contributing to the effective management of the practice, leading by example, maintaining a positive, collaborative working relationship with the multi-disciplinary team.
The role is to support, mentor, and supervise other healthcare professionals within the organisation and be an integral part of the general practice team.
Primary key responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the salaried GP in delivering health services.
The delivery of highly effective medical care to the entitled population
The provision of services commensurate with the primary care contract
To clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective and plan clinical care accordingly referring patients to other services/agencies in a timely manner, utilising practice and any other local guidelines
Generic prescribing adhering to local and national guidance
Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care
Effective management of long-term conditions
To support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care
Processing of administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests and other associated administrative tasks
Review medications following the appropriate policies, NICE/local clinical guidelines and local care pathways
Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with good practice, policy and guidance
Work collaboratively, accepting an equal share of the practice workload
Adhere to best practice recommended through clinical guidelines and the audit process
Support the delivery of anticipatory care plans
Contribute to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives within the practice
Accept delegated responsibility for a specific area (or areas) or the QOF
Attend and contribute effectively to practice meetings as required
Contribute effective to the development and maintenance of the practice including clinical governance and training
Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
Ensure compliance with the appraisal process
Prepare and complete the revalidation process to remain fit to practice
Commit to self-learning and instil an ethos of continuing professional development across the practice team
Review and always adhere to practice protocols and policies
Encourage collaborative working, liaising with all staff regularly, always promoting a culture of continuous improvement
To be an integral part of the general practice team as well as supporting the wider network and multi-disciplinary team
There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels
Wider responsibilities
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the salaried GP has the following wider responsibilities:
Participate in the spectrum of clinical governance processes
Participate in formal training events promoting best practice in area of expertise Provide leadership and education for members of the multi-disciplinary team, providing guidance and support when necessary
Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
Requirements
Experience
Ability to both work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Experience of working in a primary care environment
Experience of providing home visits
General understanding of the primary care contract
Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice
An appreciation of the NHS landscape and relationship between individual organisations, PCNs and the commissioners

Qualifications
Qualified GP
MRCGP
Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent JCPTGP
Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
Clinical knowledge and skills
Essential
Good level of clinical knowledge and skills
Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice
Good MS Office and clinical system IT knowledge
Understanding of the spectrum of clinical governance processes
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including recording of accurate clinical notes
Knowledge of health promotion strategies
Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to GP colleagues
Experience of triage and the ability to effectively assess and diagnose
Ability to listen whilst being honest and caring and be both sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations
Understanding of the local pathology tests processes and the ability to processing the results with advising patients accordingly
Ability to assess and manage acute deteriorations /exacerbations of long-term conditions
Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice
Experience of medicines management
Knowledge of public health issues in the local area
Understanding and knowledge of QOF and enhanced service

Located in the heart of the historic city of Chichester, we are a friendly dispensing practice with a patient list of approximately 14,000. Our clinical team comprises three GP partners and seven salaried GPs, supported by a strong multi-disciplinary workforce including a Paramedic Practitioner, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Pharmacist and First Contact MSK Practitioner. While Chichester is widely recognised as an affluent area, our practice serves a diverse population with levels of deprivation that are higher than those seen in many neighbouring practices, providing an interesting and rewarding mix of clinical work.We have a strong focus on our team, and run mindfulness sessions (led by one of our salaried GPs), take part in Parkrun, have recently established craft sessions, and have various social events including the Christmas party, escape rooms, and quiz nights.
