Job summary

We are a friendly and supportive GP practice based in Milton Keynes, looking for a confident and experienced Nursing Associate( NA) to join our clinical team. This is a vital patient-facing role, offering the opportunity to deliver high-quality care in a close-knit, forward-thinking environment

Phlebotomy

ECG recording

Routine and complex wound care, including compression dressings

Administration of B12, Flu, Pneumonia, and Shingles vaccinations subject to PGD competency

Blood pressure checks

Foot pulse checks and physical health monitoring

Supporting patients on the chronic disease register with health checks

You will also be expected to assist in maintaining clinical areas and ensure appropriate infection control measures are followed.

Job description

The postholder will:

  • Provide and monitor care delegated or allocated within an agreed scope of practice.
  • Work as an accountable registered professional.
  • Support Registered Nurses and other clinicians in delivering routine and preventative healthcare.
  • Promote independence, self-management and healthier lifestyles.
  • Recognise the limits of their competence and seek appropriate advice or support.
  • Escalate clinical concerns without delay.
  • Contribute to safe, coordinated and integrated patient care.

The Nursing Associate role complements, but does not replace, the role of the Registered Nurse.

2. Clinical responsibilitiesThe postholder may undertake the following after completion of the relevant training and competency assessment:

Clinical observations and investigations

  • Measure and record blood pressure, including home or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring where applicable.
  • Record pulse, respiratory rate, temperature and oxygen saturation.
  • Measure height, weight, waist circumference and BMI.
  • Undertake urinalysis.
  • Perform venepuncture and prepare specimens for transportation.
  • Obtain swabs and other specimens in accordance with protocols.
  • Undertake ECGs.
  • Perform blood glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol or other point-of-care testing where trained and authorised.
  • Complete relevant templates and accurately code clinical activity.

Health promotion and prevention

  • Undertake NHS Health Checks where trained and competent.
  • Provide evidence-based advice on healthy eating, physical activity, smoking cessation, alcohol consumption and weight management.
  • Support screening, vaccination and health-promotion campaigns.
  • Encourage patient participation in decisions about their health and care.
  • Signpost patients to appropriate clinical, community and voluntary-sector services.

Long-term condition supportUnder appropriate clinical oversight and within agreed protocols, the postholder may:

  • Collect information required for structured long-term condition reviews.
  • Undertake routine monitoring and preliminary assessments.
  • Support patients with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions and other long-term conditions.
  • Reinforce previously agreed care plans and self-management advice.
  • Identify abnormal results, symptoms or changes in condition and escalate them to an appropriate clinician.
  • Assist with patient recall and follow-up arrangements.

The postholder will not independently diagnose, prescribe, alter prescribed treatment or make clinical decisions outside the Nursing Associate scope of practice.

Wound care and treatment-room dutiesWhere appropriately trained and assessed as competent, the postholder may:

  • Assess and document routine wounds using an approved framework.
  • Clean and dress wounds in accordance with clinical guidance.
  • Remove sutures and clips.
  • Undertake basic compression or leg-ulcer care only where specifically trained, assessed and authorised.
  • Recognise signs of infection, deterioration, impaired circulation or delayed healing and escalate concerns.
  • Assist with other treatment-room procedures.

Vaccinations, injections and medicinesThe postholder may administer vaccinations, injections or other medicines only when:

  • The activity is within their professional scope.
  • They have completed the required training.
  • Their competence has been formally assessed and documented.
  • An appropriate legal authority is in place.
  • The practice has authorised them to undertake the activity.
  • Appropriate clinical support and emergency arrangements are available.

The postholder must understand and follow the practices procedures for consent, cold-chain management, anaphylaxis, medicine storage, adverse-event reporting and emergency escalation.
