The University of Exeter is a public research university in the West Country of England, with its main campus in Exeter, Devon. Its predecessor institutions, St Luke's College, Exeter School of Science, Exeter School of Art, and the Camborne School of Mines were established in 1838, 1855, 1863, and 1888 respectively. These institutions formed the University of Exeter when it received its royal charter in 1955. In post-nominals, the University of Exeter is abbreviated as Exon. ; this is the suffix given to honorary and academic degrees from the university.
Mining is a cornerstone industry that utilises natural capital. Downsizing or cessation of mining occurs when ore deposits become subeconomic or exhausted. The loss of a cornerstone industry, combined with limited economic diversification and negative environmental legacies, are key challenges for…
The Arctic is warming rapidly, causing widespread permafrost thaw and associated ground deformation, instability and erosion. Monitoring these changes across vast and remote Arctic regions is challenging, yet understanding how the ground responds to permafrost degradation is increasingly important…
Electrifying heavy-duty maritime vessels, mining equipment and off-highway machinery is central to Net Zero and Clean Energy goals. Unlike conventional automotive traction systems, electric propulsion for these applications must often deliver sustained high torque at low rotational speed during…
Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and presents a significant socioeconomic burden from direct treatment costs, and indirect costs due to losses in productivity. An ageing population, combined with increases in inactivity and obesity is expected to further increase this…
Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide offers a route to manufacture valuable chemicals using renewable electricity. However, most high-rate CO₂ electrolysers operate under alkaline conditions, where substantial carbon can be lost through carbonate formation. Acidic CO₂ electrolysis could…
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is where kidneys suddenly stop working properly. It can range from minor loss of kidney function to complete kidney failure. Without quick treatment, abnormal levels of salts and chemicals can build up in the body, which affects the ability of other organs to…
Background: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in working aged people. All people with diabetes aged over 12 need annual retina screening by attending ophthalmology clinic. This produces over a billion retina images every year. However, about 50% of diabetic adults do not…
Neuroscience has been a major source of inspiration for modern Artificial Intelligence frameworks, such as Deep Networks, Reinforcement Learning, and Large Language Models. This project investigates how two more recent Neuroscience developments could help improve Deep Networks. The first…
The behaviour of animals determines their responses to environmental change and ultimately shapes whether populations persist or decline. Tools to record and analyse the behaviour of individual animals under natural conditions are therefore vital not only for fundamental research to understand why…
Emerging infectious diseases pose substantial threats to the health of wildlife, livestock, humans and ecosystems. Wildlife serve as important reservoirs and vectors for a diverse range of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. However, pathogen transmission dynamics…
This project combines environmental sensing, computational modelling and data analytics to understand how climate change, wildfire and land use are reshaping tropical forest microclimates. Tropical forests are warming and drying from the inside. Wildfire, degradation, land-use change and climate…
Ocean mixing plays a fundamental role in regulating Earth's climate by controlling how heat, carbon and nutrients are transported through the deep ocean. Small scale turbulent mixing drives the buoyancy gain of dense abyssal waters and enables the return flow of the global Meridional Overturning…
Climate change is intensifying hazards, such as flooding, heat, drought, storms, that threaten the resilience of UK infrastructure. Most existing risk assessments treat these hazards in isolation and for single asset classes, missing two critical realities: hazards compound (e.g. heat and drought…
Metamaterials use engineered structures to achieve functionality that the constituent materials alone cannot provide. This project explores novel bioinspired fluidic metamaterials which use hierarchical surface patterns inspired by carnivorous plants to control the speed and direction of water…
Plant viruses pose a major challenge to global food production. Their ability to evolve, overcome crop defences, cross species barriers and emerge in more damaging forms threatens agricultural sustainability worldwide. Yet we still do not understand one of the key processes driving viral evolution…
Rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon represent the gold standard for technologically advanced fish farming (aquaculture). The market is valued at $5.3 billion for trout globally (£59 million in the UK) and $18.9 billion for salmon globally (£1.13 billion in the UK). An emerging but quantitatively…
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) underpin UK employment and innovation, yet many struggle to turn early success into sustainable growth. Rising demand can expose informal routines, disconnected systems, founder dependence and employee overload. Managers may see delayed delivery or lost…
Most organisations can demonstrate that AI works in a pilot; far fewer can sustain its value when it is embedded in complex, high-throughput operations. In supply chains, this matters not only commercially but environmentally. When AI-enabled forecasting, inventory and decision-support systems lose…
Metamaterials are advanced materials with engineered structures that give them properties beyond those of their constituent materials. They are increasingly positioned by academics and policymakers as a critical addition to advanced materials product pipelines. Public and private investment in the…
Structured light for full 3D vectorial control of the focal field — and the first true 3D readout of molecular organisation in tissue. During this project you will lead the design, build and programming an optical microscope that does something no existing instrument can: Shape the full 3D vector…
