The University of Exeter is a public research university in the West Country of England, with its main campus in Exeter, Devon. Its predecessor institutions, St Luke's College, Exeter School of Science, Exeter School of Art, and the Camborne School of Mines were established in 1838, 1855, 1863, and 1888 respectively. These institutions formed the University of Exeter when it received its royal charter in 1955. In post-nominals, the University of Exeter is abbreviated as Exon. ; this is the suffix given to honorary and academic degrees from the university.
Quantum technologies require new approaches to overcoming limited coherence, control errors and connectivity between qubits. This 3.5-year PhD will investigate whether nanomechanical systems can provide an alternative platform for quantum information processing and quantum-enhanced sensing. The…
Our aim is to control the magnetic state of a material using only pulses of light. “Switching” the magnetization of a magnet means that its north and south poles are interchanged without mechanically inverting the magnet. Magnets are normally opaque so that incident light only affects ten to…
The motivation for this project is to develop the mathematical foundations for the next generation of ocean-wave forecasting models. Accurate and timely wave forecasts are essential for the safety of shipping, coastal communities, and offshore operations, including the construction and maintenance…
Mathematical models are important tools for gaining insight into complex processes across biological systems and healthcare. To support high-stakes decisions in a clinical setting using these models, we need to ensure that their predictions are credible. Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) is one of…
Quantum graph theory (QGT), defined as metric graphs endowed with differential operators, has a long history in mathematics, physics, and both theoretical chemistry and biology. The theory describes the wave properties of networks constructed from edges, endowed with the Schrödinger operator,…
This project is primarily in the field of Diophantine Approximation, which studies how well real numbers can be approximated by rational numbers and variations on this theme. Sets encountered in Diophantine Approximation are often fractal-like and it is natural to use notions from Fractal Geometry…
Agentic AI systems are language models that plan, call software tools, and complete multi-step tasks with little human input. They are moving from demonstrations into business operations such as customer support, procurement, invoice processing, and compliance checking. Most of these agents run on…
Food texture and mouthfeel are not only critical for consumer liking and acceptance, but are also intrinsically linked to mastication, swallowing and digestion. In turn, this effects the nutritional and dietary characteristics of a product. The human perception of food texture is governed by the…
Medical imaging generates very large and rapidly growing volumes of data. Although AI can support automated image analysis, many current models require substantial computing power, memory and processing time. This limits population-scale research, increases deployment costs and restricts adoption…
Summary: This PhD project will develop the next generation of hyper realistic animal free phantoms to overcome the "quantification problem" in deep Raman spectroscopy (DRS). This will enable quantitative analysis in future animal studies and varied healthcare applications. By combining time-domain…
Digital Twins rely on synchronisation between physical and virtual entities to maintain sufficient fidelity with the systems they represent. However, determining when synchronisation is genuinely necessary remains a significant challenge, particularly under uncertainty emerging from forecast…
About The Role Hospital Placement Lead (Torbay) Senior Lecturer in University of Exeter Medical School (Education and Scholarship) The salary will be renumerated through NHS payroll at equivalent of 1.25PA (0.125 FTE). This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – primarily on campus and…
Accurate short-term visibility forecasts are essential for safe and efficient transport operations, particularly aviation, where low visibility can reduce airport capacity and cause delays and cancellations. Yet visibility remains difficult to predict. Poor visibility is highly localised and…
Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and presents a significant socioeconomic burden from direct treatment costs, and indirect costs due to losses in productivity. An ageing population, combined with increases in inactivity and obesity is expected to further increase this…
Lithium-ion batteries are essential to achieving net zero by 2050, supporting electric vehicles, energy storage and the continued expansion of renewable energy. Rapid growth in battery manufacturing is driving demand for lithium, with UK battery manufacturers alone potentially requiring…
About The Role Lecturer in Physical Education (Education and Scholarship) This 0.4FT part-time post is available from as soon as possible after 1st January 2027. The starting salary will be from £44,352 on Grade F pro rata, depending on knowledge, skills and experience. Please note that this role…
The aim of the project is to develop explainable and trustworthy machine-learning models for the early detection of cognitive decline and dementia. By integrating multimodal data (cognitive assessments, neuroimaging, genetics, lifestyle factors and comorbidities) from diversified information…
Modern security systems often rely on complex software that translates programs into forms that can be checked automatically. To trust such systems, it is not enough to verify the underlying security protocol: we must also know that the checked representation faithfully captures the intended…
This project will build a bridge between the two strands of theoretical computer science, (a) algorithms and complexity theory and (b) logic and programming language theory, and to put the resulting bridge into practical applications such as in the efficient implementations of mechanized proof…
Lecturer in DClinPsy (Education and Scholarship) This 0.5 - 0.9 FTE part-time post is immediately available on a fixed term basis to cover a maternity until 24 September 2027. We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements. The Role Faculty…
