How you'll make a difference

As a Passenger Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting vulnerable children on their journeys to and from school. Providing care, encouragement and reassurance, you will help create a safe, calm and positive travelling environment, ensuring each child arrives at their destination comfortably and securely.

What you will be doing

Supervising children throughout their journeys to and from school, you will ensure their safety, comfort and wellbeing at all times.

You will assist children when boarding and leaving the vehicle, assist with seat belts and any specialist equipment where required, and respond appropriately to individual needs to ensure a positive and inclusive travel experience.

It will be your responsibility to accurately record and report any concerns, incidents or issues, ensuring information is communicated promptly and appropriately to parents, schools, transport providers and the Integrated Transport team.

What we need from you

It is essential you have experience of working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals, with an understanding of how to provide appropriate support to meet a range of needs.

You will be able to interact with children in a calm, patient, caring and compassionate manner, building positive relationships and helping them feel safe, comfortable and supported during their journey.

We are looking for someone who has a knowledge of safeguarding principles and responsibilities, gained through previous experience or training, or can demonstrate a willingness and commitment to develop this knowledge as part of the role.

Due to the nature of this role, you must be physically able to support children when boarding and leaving the vehicle, assist with seat belts and specialist equipment where required, and provide appropriate practical support throughout the journey.

What you need to know

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this post.

This is a variable (zero-hours) position.

You must be able to travel to designated pick-up and drop-off locations within South Gloucestershire. Therefore, you must reside within the South Gloucestershire area and clearly state your location within your application.

Interviews will take place regularly during November and early December.

How a career at South Gloucestershire Council is different

As part of our benefits package, you will receive generous annual leave (pro rata), employee wellbeing support and you will have access to a range of staff discounts, including eye tests, travel, shopping and leisure activities.

We recognise that our diverse team of skilled and dedicated people make us a great place to work. We welcome applications from everyone and ensure that individuals are selected, promoted and developed on the basis of their merits and abilities.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. Ensuring all our staff are given right skills, knowledge and support to recognise and respond effectively to potential abuse or neglect.

Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.

We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of.

We're planning for the future; building and improving the roads, railways, schools, green spaces, and houses.

We’re providing essential services across our communities to ensure they are safe and well maintained.

We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.

We’re making a difference, be part of it!
