Post No. FL079 - Assistant Solicitor - Litigation

Full Time, Fixed Term for Three Years

About the Role

At Newport City Council Legal Services, we're seeking a motivated and ambitious Assistant Solicitor to join our Litigation Team. This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified solicitor, barrister, or equivalent legal professional who is looking to broaden their experience while making a real difference to the communities we serve. You'll have the opportunity to work on a varied caseload, gaining valuable experience across different areas of litigation and advisory work while supporting one of Wales’s most progressive local authorities.

No two days are the same. You'll work on matters that directly impact local people, services, and communities, providing a unique level of professional challenge, responsibility, and job satisfaction.

You will manage your own varied caseload, providing high-quality legal advice and representation across a broad spectrum of litigation matters. Working alongside experienced colleagues in a friendly and supportive team environment, you'll have the opportunity to work independently while benefiting from ongoing guidance and professional support.

What We Are Looking For?

We're looking for someone who is:

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or equivalent legal professional.
• Organised, proactive, and able to manage competing priorities.
• Committed to delivering excellent legal services.
• Enthusiastic about developing new skills and broadening their legal expertise.
• Able to demonstrate strong attention to detail and sound legal judgement.

Whilst previous local government experience would be advantageous, it is not essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate the skills, behaviours, and enthusiasm needed to thrive in a dynamic legal environment.

Why Join Us?

If you're looking for a role where your work has purpose, your development is supported, and your expertise can make a tangible difference, we'd love to hear from you.

Come and build your future with a forward-thinking Council that places its people at the heart of everything it does.

We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and
particularly welcomes applications from people from minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role.

Newport City Council is not currently supporting applicants with sponsorship for right to work. In applying for a vacancy, applicants should already have the right to work in the UK.
