Are you an experienced registered nurse who is passionate about delivering outstanding palliative and end of life care, while also supporting, managing and developing others?

We are looking for a compassionate and motivated Nurse Team Leader to join our 10-bed Inpatient Unit at Ashgate Hospice.

This is an opportunity to combine clinical leadership with an important role in the day-to-day management of our nursing team. Working closely with the Ward Leader, you will help ensure our patients receive excellent care while creating an environment where colleagues feel supported, confident and able to develop in their roles.

You will play a key part in coordinating the nursing team, maintaining safe staffing levels, supporting staff performance and development, and promoting a positive and inclusive working environment. Alongside this, you will provide clinical guidance, coordinate patient care and contribute to the ongoing development of our inpatient service.

Part-time, with a minimum of 28.75 hours per week. There may be scope to increase the hours, subject to service needs and budget.

Main duties of the job

You will be confident making decisions, managing competing priorities and supporting colleagues to deliver high standards of care.

You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, an understanding of clinical governance and patient safety, and a commitment to staff wellbeing, professional development and collaborative working.

Desirable qualifications and experience include a qualification in palliative care or relevant advanced clinical practice, a management or leadership qualification, a teaching or mentorship qualification, and experience of clinical audit, quality improvement or supporting volunteers. Advanced Communication Skills Training is also desirable, or a willingness to complete it.

Job description

As Nurse Team Leader, you will combine clinical leadership with responsibility for the day-to-day management and development of the nursing team. Working closely with the Ward Leader, you will take delegated responsibility for the safe and effective running of the Inpatient Unit during your shift, coordinating patient care, prioritising workloads and ensuring staff are deployed appropriately according to patient needs and available skills.

An important part of your role will be supporting and managing colleagues. This will include coordinating rotas, helping maintain safe staffing levels, supporting sickness and absence management, contributing to staff supervision and performance management, and encouraging professional development. You will also support recruitment, induction and the ongoing development of staff, promoting wellbeing, positive working relationships and a compassionate, inclusive team culture.

You will provide clinical guidance and specialist palliative care support to patients, families and colleagues, oversee safe medicines management, and support patient admissions, transfers and discharges. You will also contribute to clinical governance, incident learning, audits and quality improvement, helping maintain high standards of care and support the ongoing development of the service. You will deputise for the Ward Leader when delegated.
