Financial Compliance AuditorUniversity

Sheffield Full time £38,784 - £47,389 a year
Posted 27 August 2026 Closing date 18 September 2026

Job description:

Are you an audit, assurance or finance professional who values technical competence and collaborative working to help a complex organisation improve how it works?

Whether you are looking to make your first move out of professional practice into an in-house role, or you already have established experience in an internal audit or compliance function, this is an excellent platform to develop your skills and career.

We are looking for a Compliance Auditor to join the University of Sheffield’s Financial Assurance team. This is a newly created role, supporting the University to strengthen financial control, compliance and governance across a large and highly varied institution.

Reporting to the Head of Financial Assurance, you will help deliver financial compliance healthchecks across our Schools and Professional Service departments. You will review evidence, analyse financial data, identify risks and control gaps, and turn your findings into clear, practical messages for colleagues across the University.

This is not a narrow audit role. You will work across the breadth of the University’s financial operations, supporting compliance reviews, action tracking, policy development and advice to colleagues. You will also contribute to the development of our financial compliance framework as it matures alongside institutional change.

We are looking for someone who combines technical competence with the ability to communicate well. You will be confident working with financial data, internal controls and compliance requirements, but equally able to explain issues clearly to colleagues who may not have a finance background. You will be curious, pragmatic and proportionate: able to identify what matters, explain why it matters, and support colleagues to make meaningful improvements.

You will bring experience from audit, assurance, compliance, risk management, financial control or finance operations, ideally gained in a large, complex or regulated organisation. Experience in Higher Education, the NHS, local government, the wider public sector or a similar environment would be valuable. A relevant audit, accountancy or risk qualification, or equivalent experience, is necessary.

The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Their diverse backgrounds, abilities, and beliefs make Sheffield a world-class university.

We are a World Top-100 University with a global reputation for excellence in research, teaching and innovation. We’re a champion of our city and region and work closely with local partners to make our region greener, healthier and more innovative.

We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a competitive salary, an exceptional annual leave entitlement of 41 days (including bank holidays and institutional closures), a generous pension scheme, and a deep commitment to your hybrid working flexibility, wellbeing, and professional development. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.

If you are motivated to use your assurance or finance skills to make a practical difference in a large, complex institution then we would love to hear from you.
