Job summary

We are looking for a General Practitioner to join our friendly and supportive team at Spilsby Surgery, a rural dispensing practice serving Spilsby and the surrounding communities.

We are proud of the team we have at Spilsby and the supportive, collaborative environment we are continuing to build. Our focus is simple to provide excellent patient care within a practice where people feel valued, supported and able to contribute.

As the practice continues to grow and develop, we are looking for a GP who wants to be part of that development. We want you to feel part of the practice, not simply part of the rota; to bring your own experience and ideas, have a voice in how we move forward and play an active role in shaping the future of Spilsby Surgery.

Main duties of the job

As a GP at Spilsby Surgery, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centred care to our varied rural population, working closely with our established clinical team and wider practice staff.

You will manage a varied general practice workload, including consultations, clinical decision-making, prescribing, referrals, reviewing results and correspondence, and contributing to the ongoing care of our patients.

Collaborative working is an important part of how we work at Spilsby. Our clinicians have protected time for daily clinical discussion, alongside regular weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, providing opportunities to discuss patients, share expertise and support one another.

Alongside your clinical work, we want you to bring your own experience, ideas and interests to the practice. Whether developing a clinical interest, contributing to quality improvement or helping us shape and develop our services, this is a role where you can make a real contribution to both the care we provide today and the practice we are building for the future.

Job description

About the roleAs a GP at Spilsby Surgery, you will work as part of our clinical team providing high-quality, safe and patient-centred care to our practice population.

You will manage a varied general practice workload and work closely with our GPs, nursing team, advanced practitioners, dispensary and wider practice team. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working independently but also values being part of a team, sharing clinical knowledge and supporting colleagues.

Clinical responsibilitiesYour day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking face-to-face and telephone consultations.
  • Assessing, diagnosing and managing both acute and long-term conditions.
  • Prescribing and reviewing medication safely and appropriately.
  • Reviewing and acting on test results, clinical correspondence and other information relating to your patients.
  • Making referrals to secondary care and community services where appropriate.
  • Undertaking home visits when clinically required.
  • Providing preventative care, health promotion and advice.
  • Maintaining clear and accurate clinical records.
  • Providing clinical advice and support to colleagues where appropriate.
  • Working with the wider multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.

Working as part of the teamTeamwork is an important part of how we work at Spilsby. You will take part in our daily clinical discussion time and weekly multidisciplinary meetings, giving clinicians regular opportunities to discuss patients, share knowledge and seek advice from colleagues.

We expect all members of the team to communicate openly, support one another and raise concerns when something does not feel right. We want our GPs to contribute to practice discussions and decisions and to bring their own ideas and experience to the team.

Quality and patient safetyAll of our clinicians have a role in maintaining and improving the quality and safety of the care we provide. As part of this, you will:

  • Work in line with GMC standards, current clinical guidance and practice policies.
  • Take part in clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Contribute to significant event reviews and learning where appropriate.
  • Support the investigation and learning from complaints or patient safety concerns relating to clinical care.
  • Follow practice safeguarding and infection prevention procedures.
  • Work closely with our dispensary and wider team to support safe prescribing and medicines management.

Professional developmentYou will be responsible for maintaining your GMC registration, licence to practise, Performers List status and the requirements for appraisal and revalidation.

We support continuing professional development and welcome GPs with existing clinical interests, as well as those who would like to develop an area of interest while working with us.

Contributing to the practiceWe want our GPs to be part of the wider practice, not simply responsible for their own clinical workload.

There will be opportunities to become involved in service development, quality improvement, audit and other areas that match your interests and experience. As the practice continues to develop, we want our clinical team to be involved in deciding how we improve our services and the care we provide.

GeneralThis job description outlines the main responsibilities of the role and may develop over time in discussion with the postholder, reflecting the changing needs of the practice and primary care.

Most importantly, we are looking for a GP who wants to become a valued part of Spilsby Surgery. We have a strong team, an ambitious future and a genuine opportunity for the right person to make their mark, develop their interests and help shape the practice as we continue to move forward.

About us

Spilsby Surgery brings together a broad multidisciplinary team including GPs, nursing staff, advanced practitioners, dispensary, care navigation and administrative colleagues, with strong links to the wider healthcare teams supporting our local population.

Working in a rural practice offers real variety. Our patients span all ages and backgrounds, and our work extends beyond the surgery through the care we provide to local care homes and housebound patients. As a dispensing practice, we are also able to offer a broader insight into the complete patient journey and work closely across our clinical and dispensary teams.

There is a real sense of teamwork across the practice, with clinical and non-clinical colleagues working closely alongside each other as one team. We value different perspectives and believe that good ideas can come from anywhere within the team.

The role offers NHS Pension Scheme membership and the opportunity to join an established team with the variety and professional satisfaction that comes with being at the heart of healthcare within a rural community.
