The role

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and able health or social researcher with an interest in public health, to work within a leading population health sciences department. The post will support Dr Laura Tinner to conduct qualitative research for her Wellcome Funded Early Career Award. The overall aim of the programme is to adopt intersectionality as a theoretical and applied framework to understand young people’s mental health inequalities and inform equitable public health strategies. The post-holder will be based within Bristol Medical School’s thriving Centre for Public Health. They will have the opportunity to network with senior, mid and early career colleagues working on a range of public health topics and methodologies, and to attend staff meetings, reading groups and ad hoc seminars and presentations.

Part-time will be considered at a minimum of 0.6 FTE.

Hybrid working is available: there is flexibility, but generally on campus 2 days per week between Tuesday and Thursday.

What will you be doing?

The successful applicant will undertake qualitative research and related administration. This will include supporting the organisation and delivery of a Photovoice project with young people across the UK, analysing transcript and visual data in a participatory way, conducting involvement and engagement activities with young people, building relationships with relevant collaborators, scoping literature, contributing to outputs such as policy briefings and journal articles, preparing data collection materials, organising dissemination events (i.e., Photovoice exhibitions) and undertaking ethics applications. The post-holder will be encouraged to present the work internally and externally, and to attend relevant events, training and conferences.

You should apply if

You should have experience of qualitative research and a demonstrable understanding of and interest in applied public health research and young people’s inequalities and mental health in particular. Photovoice methods training will be provided, but a good understanding and experience in qualitative methods is essential, with participatory methods desirable. You must have a relevant undergraduate degree (2.1 or above). You must additionally have a Master’s degree (merit or distinction). Additional necessary experience/expertise includes knowledge of research governance, excellent organisation and time management skills, ability to write to a high standard for different audiences and effective communication skills with colleagues, external collaborators and the public, including younger people. You must be able to work flexibly as the role requires and be able to travel occasionally, possibly with overnight stays.

Contract type: Open-ended with funding until 31/12/2028 (start date 01/01/2027)

Work pattern: Full time/ 1 FTE (part-time considered at min 0.6 FTE)

Shift pattern: 35 hours per week (part-time considered)
