Main duties of the job

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced and inspirational nursing leader to join a nationally recognised Renal service and make a significant impact on patient care, workforce development and service improvement. As Senior Matron, you will provide visible and compassionate leadership across renal inpatient, outpatient and dialysis services, working in partnership with consultant colleagues, operational leaders and multidisciplinary teams to deliver outstanding clinical quality, patient experience and safety standards. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of renal services by leading quality improvement initiatives, driving innovation, supporting workforce redesign, developing future nursing leaders and ensuring the highest standards of professional practice are embedded throughout the service. Through your leadership, you will create a positive and inclusive culture where staff feel valued, empowered and supported to achieve excellence, while contributing to the strategic ambitions and continued growth of the Wessex Kidney Centre.

Job description

The Wessex Kidney Centre (WKC) is one of the largest and most comprehensive renal services in the UK, providing specialist care for a population of approximately 2.3 million people across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties. Based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, the service delivers a full range of renal care including acute and chronic kidney disease management, dialysis, transplantation, home therapies and specialist outpatient services. With over 850 dialysis patients, around 1,000 transplant recipients and a strong focus on innovation, research and service transformation, the Centre offers a dynamic and forward-thinking environment committed to delivering outstanding patient outcomes and experiences.

WKC in Queen Alexandra Hosptial houses three dedicated inpatient renal wards with 50 beds and an additional 7 day-treatment beds. There is an out-patient dialysis ward with 25 stations. WKC has its own integral out-patient department and the facility to see patients as emergencies during the day (Renal ambulatory clinic). WKC also has eight satellite dialysis units.

The unit also provides a dedicated young adult transition service with a dedicated youth worker and an dedicated supportive care team, including nurse specialist, renal counsellor and psychologist. There are excellent, committed nurse specialists in vascular access, transplantation, pre-dialysis care, home haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and anaemia management, who actively participate in and lead multidisciplinary team meetings, nurse-led and -supported clinics, audit and research. The WKC Home Therapies Hub is based in Fareham Community Hospital and houses the PD and Home HD teams.

Out-patient nephrology clinics (including general nephrology, haemodialysis (including home HD), peritoneal dialysis and transplant/vascular access review) run on every day of the week. WKC provides home haemodialysis with a dedicated support staff. This is an ongoing development with the aim to continue to provide home HD to all patients who are eligible. Currently WKC has one of the largest home dialysis patient populations nationally with ambition to grow further.

Key Responsibilities

  • To implement the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery Strategy through the development and implementation of a Divisional nursing strategy at care group level
  • To be responsible for implementing and monitoring of agreed trust quality indicators.
  • To be responsible for the implementation and progress monitoring of the corporate Patient and Public Involvement strategy within the Care group.
  • To be responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the corporate Patient Experience Strategy within the care group.
  • In collaboration with other senior nursing/AHP leaders to be responsible for the professional leadership for Nursing, Midwifery and other healthcare professionals in the Care Group, advising the Divisional Management Team of key professional issues.
  • To work with the Lead Nurse for Professional Education and the Practice Development and Divisional Education Leads to ensure that the development of education and training provision meets the clinical needs of the Care Group and supports compliance of the relevant healthcare standards
