HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT VACANCY

A position has become available for a part-time Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team at Higherland Surgery.

We are looking for a motivated, caring and reliable individual to work alongside our clinical team and provide high-quality care and support to our patients. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, compassionate and able to work effectively as part of a busy practice team.

Hours: 15 hours per week Salary: Dependent on experience

Previous experience working within a healthcare or GP setting would be advantageous, although we welcome applications from individuals who can demonstrate the appropriate skills, commitment and attitude.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: HealthCare Assistant

REPORTS TO: Practice Manager

Job Summary:

The purpose of the role is to:

Assist the Practice Nursing Team in providing investigations and support within the appropriate level of competence. To ensure compliance with all practice protocols and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities to be undertaken may include any or all of the items in the following list. Duties may be varied from time to time under the direction of the Senior Practice Nurse, dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels and include home visits, where required:

1 Clinical

  • Wound Care
  • Vaccinations
  • ECG recording
  • Blood pressure recording and lifestyle documentation and advice
  • BP and ECG domiciliary visits, as required
  • FENO Testing
  • Diabetic foot screening
  • Glucose machine teaching use of
  • Appointments for demonstration and loaning of BP home monitor
  • Urinalysis
  • Weight management
  • Assist with minor operations/IUD as required
  • New patient checks following health template
  • Dementia care plans
  • Collect and package laboratory specimens
  • To maintain stock control system for all disposables in all clinical/treatment rooms
  • To maintain agreed standards of hygiene in all clinical/treatment rooms
  • To chaperone patients as necessary
  • To check and record fridge temperatures daily, and act accordingly
  • To maintain and check appropriately:

o Emergency boxes and resuscitation equipment

o Oxygen cylinder

  • To collect and deal with clinical waste bags and sharps boxes in line with local policy
  • With support from the Practice Nurse to keep health education notice boards up to date
  • Maintain stock levels in all clinical rooms
  • To communicate appropriately with senior nurse on duty
  • Other healthcare related tasks depending on training

2 Clerical

  • To organise flu home visits
  • To organise flu lists
  • To undertake clerical duties as required by the nursing team
  • To utilise the computer to operate the appointment system and to record relevant patient information

3 Administration

  • Action computerised practice notes
  • Keep accurate and up to date records
  • To work within the practices guidelines, policies and procedures
  • To be aware of the health and safety of others in the working environment. To comply at all times with the practices health and safety policies and procedures/infection control procedures

4 General

  • To ensure confidentiality on all matters relating to patients and information obtained during the course of employment
  • To identify training needs of self and participate in relevant education/training programmes
  • To attend meetings as required
  • To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the individuals level of competence
  • Involved in teaching activities within the practice

  • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
  • In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
  • Reporting potential risks identified.

The post-holder will:

  • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work
  • Participate in audit where appropriate.

About us

Higherland Surgery is a busy GP practice located on the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre. Our clinical team currently includes 3 part-time GP Partners, 1 full-time Practice Nurse and 1 part-time Healthcare Assistant, supported by our wider practice team.

We are a training practice caring for over 5,000 patients. As a training practice, Higherland Surgery has the opportunity to work with Keele University medical students, Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctors and GP registrars. This creates a positive learning environment where education, professional development and sharing knowledge are valued across the whole practice team
