Main duties of the job
The Role
This varied and rewarding role offers the opportunity to utilise and expand your clinical skills across a broad range of patient services, including:
- Phlebotomy
- INR monitoring and testing
- NHS Health Checks
- Severe Mental Illness (SMI) Health Checks
- Diabetic foot assessments
- Vitamin B12 injections
- ECGs
- Supporting the delivery of chronic disease monitoring
- Accurate clinical record keeping using practice systems
- Promoting health and wellbeing through patient education and lifestyle advice
- Working collaboratively with GPs, nurses and the wider practice team
No two days are the same, making this an ideal role for someone who enjoys variety, autonomy and meaningful patient contact.
Job description
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. Undertake patient health checks
b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
d. When trained provide INR monitoring for Warfarin management
e. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
f. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
g. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
h. Carry out BMI checks as directed
i. Act as a chaperone as required
j. Undertake venepuncture
k. Carry out ECGs as requested
l. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
m. Provide support during minor operations as required
n. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
o. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
p. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
q. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
