Job summary

NHS Professionals are looking for bank ANAESTHETIC PRACTITIONERS to support the theatres team at University Hospital Southampton

UHS has 40 theatres, you will work across multiple areas including Trauma Orthopaedics, ENT Max Fac, Vascular, Thoracic, General and CEPOD along with Cardiac and Neuro. The team also works in X Ray, Cath labs, Angio suites CT and MRI scanners. We support our ED colleagues caring for Level One Trauma, we are an adult and paediatric Major Trauma Centre.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a high standard of individualised patient care, in accordance with agreed policies and within available resources, which has the Trust core values at its heart. You should be able to demonstrate the aptitude to work in highly pressurised situations with maturity, motivation, enthusiasm, and common sense.

-We are looking for an experienced ODP/RN who is ready for the next step in their Anaesthetics career, is passionate and will strive to inspire, develop and support every patient, every colleague, every day.

-As a Band 5 ODP/RN in anaesthetics you will have recent post- registration experience within an acute theatre environment.

Job description

  • To act as patient advocate and to maintain high standards of patient care, appropriate to the age of the patient, where relevant and ensuring that patient objectives are achieved using a systematic approach to patient care.
  • To assess plan deliver and evaluate individualised patient centred care and provide support and advice to other staff as appropriate
  • To receive patients and their relatives in accordance with recognised policies and ensure that they are kept informed of treatment and progress.
  • To arrange the care of patients property, in accordance with Unit policies and within the limitations of hospital responsibilities.
  • To liaise with all members of the multi-professional team to ensure that all treatments are correctly carried out in accordance with given policy.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of resources and cost-effective measures in planning care.
  • Implement the role of the perioperative practitioner in minimising the health and safety risk to patients, visitors and all members of staff.
  • Identify the criteria for good practice in minimising the risk of infection within the guidelines of the Infection Control Policy.
  • Have an understanding of Infection Prevention and use of Standard Precautions following Trust Infection Prevention policies.
  • Provides skilled assistance in one or more core areas- scrub, anaesthetics and recovery duties to the level of core competencies.
  • With appropriate experience and training, work flexibly across specialities.   • With appropriate experience and training, lead and delegate work within a team of staff, recognising and utilising members of the teams skills effectively through appropriate work assignment, decision-making authority, and responsibility.
  • To maintain accurate records of observation, treatment and care.
  • To co-ordinate the requirements and take part in the transfer of patients to other departments within the Trust.
  • To participate in the ordering, checking and administration of prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) and other substances in accordance with Trust Policies.
  • To inform the person in charge of any untoward incidents, complaints or problems affecting staff/ patients/ relatives and visitors and complete adverse event reporting.
  • To adhere to the NMC/ HCPC Code of Conduct and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To act as a positive role model, demonstrating sound clinical judgement whilst giving advice to other professionals within their own scope of practice.
  • Ensure all medical equipment and devices are well maintained and ready for use at all times, reporting any faults or potential hazards to senior staff and arranging for replacements as necessary, ensuring decontamination procedures are followed.
  • To actively contribute to ideas for enhancing patient care using evidence-based practice
  • Actively respond to emergencies or untoward situations in the workplace.
  • To help create an environment that is conducive with learning and development.
