Job summary

Ward 4 at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our specialist vascular surgery team on a fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave.

Ward 4 is a 33-bedded vascular surgery ward, including a 6-bedded Vascular Enhanced Care Unit (VECU), providing care for patients with complex vascular and post-operative needs. As the regional centre for vascular surgery, the ward provides an exciting and challenging environment in which to develop specialist surgical nursing knowledge, clinical skills and confidence.

The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team, providing safe, effective and patient-centred care to patients throughout their surgical journey. The role will involve caring for patients following a range of complex vascular procedures and supporting patients with higher levels of post-operative dependency within the VECU following training.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse who is keen to develop their post-operative assessment and management skills and gain experience within a specialist vascular surgical environment.

The successful candidate will be through a range of education and development opportunities to support ongoing professional development and the acquisition of specialty-specific skills.

Main duties of the job

They will also be required to work a range of shifts, including long days, nights, weekends and bank holidays, in accordance with service requirements.

Main Duties and Tasks:

The successful candidate will:

• Provide safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing complex vascular surgical procedures.
• Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments and develop, implement and evaluate individualised care plans.
• Monitor and recognise changes in patients' clinical condition and escalate concerns promptly and appropriately.
• Provide high-quality post-operative care, including monitoring of vital signs, wound and drain management, pain management, fluid balance and nutritional needs.
• Develop skills in caring for patients with increased post-operative dependency within the Vascular Enhanced Care Unit.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration, working within the Trust's escalation and emergency response procedures.
• Administer medicines safely in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
• Provide appropriate pre-operative and post-operative patient education and support, promoting recovery, independence and safe discharge.

Main Duties and Tasks Continued:

Liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team, including medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, specialist nurses and other members of the wider healthcare team.

• Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive nursing documentation in accordance with professional and Trust requirements.
• Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives/carers, providing information, reassurance and emotional support.
• Contribute to the safe discharge and transfer of patients, ensuring appropriate communication and continuity of care.
• Maintain and develop specialist knowledge and clinical skills relevant to vascular and post-operative nursing.
• Participate in clinical supervision, mandatory training and relevant education and professional development opportunities.
• Support students, newly qualified nurses and other learners as appropriate to the role and level of experience.
• Contribute to maintaining a safe, clean and positive clinical environment and uphold infection prevention and control standards.
• Work collaboratively as part of the nursing and multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care.
• Promote a culture of dignity, respect, equality and patient-centred care at all times.
• Adhere to Trust policies, procedures, professional standards and relevant legislation.
