Job summary

The Children's Cardiorespiratory and Intensive Care Directorate are currently seeking a full time paediatric respiratory consultant with a specialist interest in Sleep Medicine. The successful candidate will have a broad expertise in PRM, ideally with a special interest in Sleep Medicine. The candidate should have completed national grid specialist respiratory training or its equivalent and ideally have engaged in research and obtained or be engaged in achieving a higher degree.

Outpatients and office space will be located at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Inpatient ward cover and on call is based at the Evelina London Children's Hospital. (10PA)

Job description

To provide clinical services for paediatric respiratory patients in accordance with clinical and legal requirements and in keeping with the international role of the Trust.

Clinical Responsibilities

Attending consultant for the week, providing in-patient services to Sky Ward and respiratory patients on Mountain ward and Snow Leopard (long term ventilation and sleep unit). Acute second opinion requests will come from all other areas of the hospital including NICU and PICU. On call is a 1 in 7 or 8 acute week, with weekend ward rounds. General paediatric respiratory cases such as acute asthma cases or bronchiolitis admitted via Evelina A&E come under the care of the general paediatric teams.

Current sleep work is home sleep study reporting, covering this on a weekly basis providing a service to legacy Brompton children from most areas in London. The in-patient sleep service is currently provided by the on-call teams but the service is developing as the services merge to achieve the best way of working for the patients. There is ongoing work around expanding sleep beds, and sleep cover may change as a result of this.

Outpatient clinics at Brompton 1 general paediatric respiratory, 1 long term ventilation sleep clinic fortnightly. Some of these can be video clinics.

The post will include close liaison with the sleep services at Evelina site unit, working with sleep physiology teams from both the legacy RBH and Evelina sites and management of long-term ventilation patients.

The post-holder will be required to contribute fully to the administrative and management needs of the Paediatric Respiratory service and the similar needs more widely within the Trust.

The post-holder should be able to perform flexible bronchoscopy, although support for development of this will be available.

Teaching and Training

There is a commitment to teaching undergraduate students from both Imperial College and GKT medical schools both during their paediatric attachments and in special study modules (SSMs). We also have a large commitment to postgraduate training.

Professional Responsibilities

To seek and maintain professional CPD and Trust mandatory training.

To maintain current knowledge of paediatric respiratory medicine and to participate in a recognised programme of continuing medical education and professional development

To set and maintain high professional standards.

A strong commitment to clinical audit, quality improvement, evidence-based practice and to developing a research programme in line with the research strategy of the Paediatric Directorate and the Trust will be required of a successful applicant.
