Job summary

The Anaesthetic department provides services to three sites - Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH), Alexandra Hospital, and Kidderminster Treatment Centre (KTC), encompassing all major specialities with a strong countywide working ethos. Recent surgical reconfiguration means most elective surgery will be delivered on the Alexandra Hospital site, while the majority of emergency, trauma and obstetric work will be on the WRH site. KTC functions as a day-case and short-stay surgical unit. Applicants will be required to contribute to the general and obstetric on call rota. Clinical governance is fundamental to the operational delivery of anaesthetic services and the new appointee will be expected to contribute to clinical governance meetings (at present 11 per annum), audits and medical education including simulation training within the Trust. The department was proud to receive Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) in October 2018, recognising 100% compliance with ACSA standards, and recently re-accredited. All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving their CCT in Anaesthesia at the time of interview. FRCA (or equivalent) is an essential qualification for this post.

Main duties of the job

The Anaesthetic Department welcomes applications from candidates with a broad range of anaesthetic interests. We would also be particularly interested to hear from candidates with an interest in Chronic Pain Management, given forthcoming opportunities to contribute to and support the Chronic Pain Management Service.

The post will encompass a variety of anaesthetic subspecialties, with on-call commitments at both Worcestershire Royal Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch. On call work will cover emergency theatres at the Alexandra Hospital and emergency theatres and obstetrics at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. • 11 Operating Theatres (including 2 obstetric theatres and 1 ophthalmic theatre.)
• 15 intensive Care beds.

Alexandra Hospital, Redditch

• 10 Operating Theatres (including 1 ophthalmic theatre.)
• 8 Intensive Care beds.

Kidderminster Treatment Centre

• 5 operating theatres (including 1 ophthalmic theatre.)
• 2 Treatment Rooms.
• Pre-op assessment clinics on all sites.
• Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing clinic.

Activity data

In 2025-2026 the trust performed 20150 elective procedures and 3786 emergency procedures countywide. There were 4804 births on the WRH site during this year.

New patient referrals to the Pain Management services are about 2000 per year.

Job description

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

• A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
• The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
• The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital. The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
• The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings.
• The post-holder will collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust's and departmental objectives.
• The post-holder will, if relevant, participate in the on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.
• The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
• The post-holder, whilst undertaking weekend on call duties, will attend the hospital to undertake patient reviews.
