Southmead Hospital Operational Unit (SHOU), part of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, has recently implemented EPMA moving into the maintenance and optimisation stageof our journey.

We are recruiting to two distinct Band 8a roles within our growing Pharmacy EPMA team. Both positions combine advanced clinical pharmacy practice with digital transformation and medicines optimisation, while offering different specialist career pathways.

Job description

1. Highly Specialist EPMA Pharmacist

This role focuses on Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) development, optimisation and clinical transformation. You will lead the ongoing development of the SHOU EPMA system, ensuring it supports safe, efficient and effective prescribing and medicines administration.

Working closely with colleagues across pharmacy, digital services, system suppliers and clinical teams, you will use your clinical expertise to shape system design, improve workflows and support large-scale digital change.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading development, optimisation and maintenance of the EPMA system.
• Configuring and validating prescribing and clinical decision-support functionality.
• Analysing and redesigning clinical workflows.
• Supporting implementation, testing and deployment of digital solutions.
• Providing specialist clinical input into digital transformation projects.
• Leading service improvement and clinical transformation initiatives.
• Supervising and developing pharmacists, technicians and trainees.
• Maintaining a clinical pharmacy role while supporting digital transformation

2. Highly Specialist Digital Pharmacist Clinical Safety & Medicines Governance

This role focuses on digital clinical safety, medicines governance and risk management. Working collaboratively across pharmacy, digital services and clinical teams, you will lead the safe governance of medication-related digital systems and ensure patient safety remains at the centre of digital transformation.

You will act as a Clinical Safety Officer, support compliance with national clinical safety standards, lead risk management activities and contribute to the development of safe, effective digital medicines systems.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading clinical safety and governance for digital medicines systems.
• Acting as Clinical Safety Officer for medication-related systems.
• Managing clinical risk assessments, hazard logs and safety documentation.
• Leading learning from digital and medication-related incidents.
• Supporting medicines safety initiatives and digital transformation programmes.
• Providing expert advice on medicines governance, patient safety and clinical risk management.
• Delivering training and development for pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams.
• Maintaining a clinical pharmacy role alongside governance responsibilities.
