Job summary

We are seeking experienced and suitably qualified Ultrasound Sonographers to support the delivery of diagnostic antenatal ultrasound services within the Fetal Medicine Unit.

This is a diagnostic imaging role focused on antenatal ultrasound scanning and does not include outpatient clinics, theatre work or complex fetal medicine consultations.

The successful candidates will work alongside the Trust's existing ultrasound and fetal medicine teams, providing high-quality diagnostic scanning for pregnant patients across a range of routine antenatal pathways.

The service is delivered using Trust-provided ultrasound equipment and digital reporting systems, with appropriate support and induction provided by the Authority's Screening Support Sonographer.

Main duties of the job

• Undertake a range of routine antenatal ultrasound examinations, including:
• Obstetric anomaly scans (FASP), including uterine artery Dopplers
• Fetal growth scans
• Nuchal translucency (NT) and dating scans
• Twin pregnancy anatomy and growth scans
• Accurately document and report ultrasound findings in line with relevant NHS and national screening standards.
• Recognise abnormal or unexpected findings and escalate appropriately to the fetal medicine/clinical team.
• Work collaboratively with the Trusts Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound teams.
• Maintain high standards of patient care, clinical governance and professional practice.
• Work within your competence, professional registration and agreed scope of practice.

Job description

The successful Sonographer will be responsible for independently undertaking a range of routine and specialist antenatal ultrasound examinations within their scope of competence, including:

• Perform and independently report diagnostic obstetric ultrasound examinations, including:
• Fetal Anomaly Scans (FASP compliant), including uterine artery Doppler assessment 45-minute appointments
• Fetal Growth Scans 30-minute appointments
• Dating and Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scans 30-minute appointments
• Twin Pregnancy Anatomy and Growth Scans 60-minute appointments
• Produce accurate, timely and clinically appropriate ultrasound reports using Trust-approved digital reporting systems.
• Ensure all patient records and clinical documentation are completed accurately on the day of attendance.
• Identify, review and verify suspected fetal abnormalities or other abnormal findings before escalation.
• Escalate clinical concerns promptly to the appropriate Consultant Fetal Medicine Specialist, Obstetric Consultant, Designated Senior Sonographer or Trust Clinician, ensuring escalation takes place before the patient leaves the department.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of all escalations and participate in audit, quality assurance and governance reviews where required.
• Maintain compliance with national screening programme requirements, local maternity pathways and Trust policies.
• Provide compassionate, professional and patient-centred care to women and their families throughout the scanning process.
• Work collaboratively with the Fetal Medicine, Ultrasound and wider maternity teams.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and work within individual scope of practice, competencies and professional registration requirements.
• Maintain professional competence and participate in relevant continuing professional development and quality assurance activities.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to the role and service as required.
