Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced band 5 emergency care nurse to apply for a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse role in Sunderland Emergency Department.

The emergency department is a 24 hr service which is fast paced and deals primarily with adults over the age of 16 who present with injuries, ailments chronic and acute illness some of which may be life threatening. Workload can change from minute to minute and you will be expected to work under pressure to deliver care at times of extreme service pressure.

Within the role will be responsible for overseeing, delegating and assisting nursing staff and clinicians in assessing and delivery of care for these patients and their relatives or carers

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking for a new challenge who is currently working within the emergency care setting and has prior experience as a band 5/6. We require an enthusiastic, committed and motivated person with excellent communication and proven leadership skills to join our team.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, maintain high standards of care and ensure efficient and safe management of our busy emergency department.

The department delivers a 24-hour service and staff work on a rota to ensure service needs are met.

Main duties of the job

• Ensure patients attending the Emergency Department are treated within national standards and that performance measures are met.
• Be responsible and accountable for safe, effective and compassionate nursing care for all patients, exercising accountability in accordance with the NMC Code.
• Supervise, support and educate junior team members, acting as a role model.
• Support the Department Manager to achieve organisational goals and objectives.
• In the Department Managers absence, take direct responsibility for maintaining clinical, professional and cleanliness standards, ensuring safe staffing levels and escalating concerns.
• Ensure effective internal and external communication regarding patient care and resources.
• Comply with the Trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.
• Ensure essential patient care is provided and promote a positive patient experience in an environment that enables compassionate, harm-free care, working within own limitations and maintaining safe clinical practice.
• Provide effective clinical leadership to support delivery of the Trusts vision and values.
• Address concerns about care raised by patients and families as they occur, including investigating and responding to complaints.
• Continually identify opportunities to improve the quality of services and patient care, including across other services and departments where appropriate.

• When taking charge of the ward/department or in the absence of the ward/department manager, is directly responsible for ensuring that clinical, professional and cleanliness standards are maintained in the entire ward/department.
• To ensure effective communication internally and externally, regarding patient care and resources.
• To comply with the trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.
