Job summary

We are seeking a Upper GI General Surgical Consultant to join our team on a 1-year fixed term locum basis to cover maternity leave.

The successful candidate will join our team of 7 Upper GI Consultant Surgeons and 2 Emergency Surgeons across UHD. The expectation is for the successful candidate to work with our established Consultants and be flexible in providing elective Upper GI surgical and endoscopy services across UHD hospital sites in Bournemouth, Poole and Wimborne. They need to be proficient in performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, and be JAG-accredited in Upper GI endoscopy.

UHD provides the full range of benign UGI surgery as well as being the regional bariatric and oesophago-gastric cancer surgical centre, servicing the populations in Dorset, South Wiltshire and West Hampshire. We have an established laparoscopic and an evolving robotic surgical programme with access to Davinci Xi and DV5 systems at both the Bournemouth (RBH) and Poole sites. We have excellent working relationships with our GI colleagues at Dorset County Hospital and Salisbury District Hospital, and provide both expertise in abdominal wall reconstructions as well as endoscopic interventional services. The ideal candidate will have a broad experience in UGI and acute general surgery. Tertiary training in abdominal wall, or regional bariatric and cancer units is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take part in the acute surgical rota at the Bournemouth site on a 1 in 9 basis with internal cover. This runs on acute surgical blocks when all elective activity is cancelled. As part of Transformation in Dorset, acute surgical services will be provided at the Bournemouth site in phase 3 (currently earmarked for April 2027). It is anticipated that this will lead to a decreased frequency of on-calls.

The agreed job plan provides, in addition to on call activity, access to operating theatre for elective procedures, outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists, attendance at the regional UGI MDT, departmental education/planning meetings, clinical administrative time and SPA allocation. The appointee is expected to work across the UHD sites and be flexible in covering elective activity. This will be adjusted accordingly when Phase 3 Transformation takes place.

Total Activity: 11 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
• FRCS or equivalent
• JAG accredited endoscopist with experience in advanced endoscopic procedures (eg. Dilatations)
• Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or ECR
• Trained to manage the undifferentiated general surgical take
• Proficient in Upper GI endoscopy
• Appropriate training at StR level for general & UGI surgery

This job plan is intended to be worked flexibly over a seven-day working week. It is anticipated that patient related administration would be performed within the confines of the DCC PAs.

Any draft timetable is intended to show the Trust's expectation of the post and the facilities to be provided. Adjustments may be required in consultation with the appointee, clinical colleagues and Senior Management.In particular, a change may be appropriate after consultation to allow the development of a special interest held by the successful candidate
