Job summary

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS) is a well established Pathology Network in the South Midlands. The Virology and Molecular Pathology services are across two main sites; University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in Coventry and the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton.

The department is multi-disciplinary with responsibility for the operational delivery of infectious disease Serology and Molecular testing and Genomics testing for both Blood Sciences and Cellular Pathology. The department operates a 24/7 service.

The successful applicant will be a dynamic, organised individual with excellent communication skills. Experience of working in a Virology, Serology or Molecular laboratory is essential.

Applicants who do not meet the Band 6 job description through possession of the IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered. In this case, the successful applicant will be expected to complete this qualification to a deadline and will be paid at band 5 until this is completed.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist you will be expected to take responsibility for an area or instrument of the laboratory as directed by the Section and Department Managers on a rotational basis.

You will oversee performance of that assigned laboratory area including managing workload and stock, ensuring quality management and technical processes have been completed and training and developing junior staff. You will work closely with the laboratory shift manager on a daily basis to ensure effective maintenance of the service.

Job description

• Daily perform routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient or environmental samples containing potentially infectious material.
• To carry out routine maintenance on analytical equipment as required and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• To carry out equipment and method troubleshooting, advise the Section Manager of situations requiring further action, work with service engineers on fault resolution.
• To prepare, store and use reagents required for laboratory investigations.
• To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations to exacting medical and scientific standards according to Standard Operating Procedures.
• Interpretation of diagnostic investigations and be responsible for the validity of results and ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols and procedures
• To report to the Section Manager any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure, but be fully involved in the resolution of such events.
• To develop and investigate new techniques or analysers as required by the changing needs of the service.
• To ensure that all results are reported within the agreed turnaround time and to take remedial action, for example communicating appropriately with colleagues and managers.
• Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff.
• To use departmental resources efficiently and ensure reagents and consumables are ordered when approaching minimum stock levels.
• To participate in the review and update of Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety documentation including COSHH and workplace risk assessments by commenting or proposing changes.
