Locum Consultant Neurologist with a Special interest in Headache and Facial Pain (12 months) We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Consultant Neurologist to join the Headache Service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, on a 12-month locum basis.This 5 PA post offers an opportunity to work within a nationally and internationally recognised specialist service for complex headache and facial pain. You will help maintain continuity of care for existing patients while contributing to the development of specialist services, particularly CGRP monoclonal antibody and Gepant therapies and the urgent assessment and treatment of cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.You will work alongside experienced neurologists, specialist nurses, psychologists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists in a highly collaborative environment with strong links to research, education and innovation.

Main duties of the job

You will deliver three dedicated headache and facial pain outpatient clinics each week, provide care for inpatients under your responsibility and undertake the associated clinical administration and correspondence.The role has a particular focus on delivering 18-week Referral to Treatment pathways, the CGRP monoclonal antibody and Gepant therapy service, and timely specialist assessment and treatment for patients with cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.You will contribute to multidisciplinary working, including collaboration with neurosurgery and neuroradiology where required, and participate in the wider clinical and professional activities of the service. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical expertise in complex headache and facial pain disorders, excellent communication skills, the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team, and a commitment to teaching, research and continuous improvement.

The post-holder will be responsible for maintaining continuity of care for patients managed by the preceding consultant while contributing to the development of services, with particular emphasis on CGRP monoclonal antibody and Gepant therapy and services for patients with cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.

The role involves evaluating and treating a range of complex headache conditions, including patients who are candidates for CGRP blocking treatment, alongside urgent assessment and treatment initiation for cluster headache patients. The post-holder will work collaboratively with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team and contribute to timely, specialist care within the established 18-week treatment pathway.

The successful candidate will be eligible for full GMC registration with a current licence to practise and will hold, or be within six months of, a CCST in Neurology with appropriate Specialist Register status, or be progressing through the relevant Portfolio Pathway. They will hold MRCP(UK) or an equivalent qualification and have comprehensive knowledge of neurological disorders, with clinical expertise in complex headache and facial pain disorders, including trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to run an effective clinical service, identify appropriate investigations and onward referrals, communicate clearly in written and spoken English, and work effectively within an interdisciplinary or multispecialty team. They should also demonstrate leadership, sound decision-making, a commitment to teaching and continuing professional development, and the ability to work in line with UCLH's values of Safety, Kindness, Teamwork and Improving. Desirable experience includes a PhD, MD or equivalent specialist training, teaching experience, involvement in formal educational programmes, organisational experience, and a proven commitment to high-quality research and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
