Health Care Assistant

We are a busy, friendly, growing GMS practice in Moulton (near Spalding). We have a multi skilled team with a wealth of experience and are looking for a caring, enthusiastic and reliable Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly multidisciplinary team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people and wants to make a positive difference to patient care in a busy GP practice. Working under the direction of our nursing and clinical team, you will deliver safe, effective and compassionate care within your level of competence. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organisational skills, a professional manner and a commitment to confidentiality and high standards of patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • Carry out NHS health checks and routine clinical observations, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight and BMI.
  • Undertake phlebotomy and prepare or process specimens for laboratory collection, where trained and competent.
  • Perform other agreed procedures, such as ECGs, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring, new-patient checks, smoking-status reviews and health-promotion activities.
  • Support long-term condition reviews and vaccination programmes within agreed protocols and competency.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential electronic patient records.
  • Prepare, clean, stock and maintain consulting and treatment rooms and clinical equipment.
  • Recognise and report concerns or changes in a patients condition promptly to an appropriate clinician.
  • Follow practice policies on infection prevention and control, safeguarding, information governance, health and safety, equality and confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, administrative colleagues and the wider primary care team.
  • Undertake training, supervision and competency assessments relevant to the role.
  • Administration & paperwork, ensuring all appropriate templates & coding are completed.

Clinical Duties

  • Undertake NHS Health Checks.

  • Carry out ECG recordings.
  • Perform new patient health checks.
  • Undertake wound care and simple dressings following appropriate training.
  • Carry out simple health screenings and observations.
  • Assist with chronic disease monitoring clinics.
  • Chaperone patients during examinations and procedures.
  • Prepare consulting and treatment rooms before and after clinics.
  • Ensure clinical equipment is cleaned, maintained and calibrated in accordance with infection prevention and control policies.

Patient Care

  • Provide high standards of compassionate care to patients.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and support patients with smoking cessation, weight management and general wellbeing advice.
  • Support patients to understand health conditions and treatment plans.
  • Maintain patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Respond appropriately to patient concerns and escalate clinical issues when necessary.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Accurately record all clinical information within the patient's electronic medical record.
  • Process pathology samples safely and correctly.
  • Manage stock levels and order clinical supplies when required.
  • Ensure clinical rooms remain well stocked and compliant with infection control standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with recall programmes for chronic disease management and screening.

Infection Prevention and Health & Safety

  • Adhere to all infection prevention and control policies.
  • Ensure safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
  • Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Report incidents, accidents or significant events in line with practice procedures.
  • Comply with all health and safety legislation and practice policies.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Work within the scope of competence and seek advice when appropriate.
  • Maintain professional registration where applicable.
  • Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development.
  • Attend practice meetings and contribute to service improvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, NHS guidance and Practice policies.
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, Nurses, Reception Staff, Administrators and the wider Primary Care Team.
