Job summary
Waterloo Medical Centre is a progressive and forward-thinking Primary Care provider based on Waterloo Road in Blackpool. We deliver a broad range of services designed to meet the needs of our local population, addressing health inequalities, chronic disease management, prevention and wellbeing, improved patient access, and the ongoing shift of services from secondary to primary care.
We care for a registered population of over 12,500 patients through a dedicated team of clinical, administrative and management professionals. We are also part of a successful Primary Care Network alongside Bloomfield Medical Centre, serving a combined population of approximately 30,000 patients across both practices.
We are looking to recruit an experienced, motivated and innovative Enhanced Practice Nurse to join our leadership team. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious nurse with strong clinical skills and a passion for service improvement to play a key role in shaping and developing nursing services within a busy and expanding practice.
Main duties of the job
The Enhanced Practice Nurse will provide clinical leadership and day-to-day management of the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality patient care. The post holder will lead the development of nursing services, support the achievement of quality and contractual targets, and work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes.
The role includes managing long-term condition services, health promotion programmes, vaccinations and screening services, workforce planning, clinical governance, infection prevention and control, and quality improvement initiatives. The post holder will also maintain an active clinical caseload, delivering evidence-based care to patients with a range of long-term conditions.
As a key member of the leadership team, the Enhanced Practice Nurse will contribute to service development, staff development, operational planning and continuous improvement, helping to ensure nursing services remain responsive, patient-centred and aligned with NHS priorities.
Job description
Clinical Leadership
- Provide leadership, support and professional guidance to the nursing team.
- Promote and maintain high standards of patient care and clinical practice.
- Ensure nursing services are delivered in accordance with current evidence-based guidance and best practice.
- Develop, implement and review clinical policies, protocols and guidelines.
- Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement and clinical excellence.
- Monitor clinical performance and identify opportunities for service enhancement.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes.
- Support the development of advanced nursing practice within the organisation.
Service Development
- Lead the planning, development and implementation of nursing services.
- Develop services that support prevention, early intervention and long-term condition management.
- Lead programmes relating to:
- Long-term condition management
- Health promotion and prevention
- Vaccination and immunisation programmes
- NHS screening programmes
- Women's health services
- Public health initiatives
- Monitor service performance and achievement against agreed targets.
- Support the delivery of QOF, Enhanced Services and other contractual requirements.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, service redesign and improved patient outcomes.
Workforce Management
- Manage and support all members of the nursing team.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix are maintained.
- Develop nursing rotas and workload allocation systems.
- Participate in recruitment, selection and induction of nursing staff.
- Conduct annual appraisals and performance reviews.
- Identify learning and development needs.
- Support career progression and succession planning.
- Ensure compliance with mandatory training and professional revalidation requirements.
- Promote staff wellbeing and professional development.
Governance, Quality and Compliance
- Lead nursing governance activities within the practice.
- Support compliance with:
- Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements
- Infection Prevention and Control standards
- Clinical Governance frameworks
- Safeguarding policies and procedures
- Health and Safety requirements
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement programmes.
- Lead nursing involvement in significant event reviews and organisational learning.
- Investigate incidents, complaints and clinical concerns relating to nursing services.
- Monitor and manage clinical risks.
- Ensure patient safety remains central to all nursing activities.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Act as the practice lead or deputy lead for Infection Prevention and Control as required.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention policies and standards.
- Conduct audits and monitor compliance.
- Promote best practice across the multidisciplinary team.
- Implement action plans arising from audit findings and inspections.
Operational Responsibilities
- Ensure effective day-to-day operation of nursing services.
- Manage vaccine stocks, clinical supplies and consumables.
- Oversee treatment room processes and procedures.
- Monitor the maintenance and servicing of clinical equipment.
- Ensure clinical areas remain compliant with required standards.
- Work alongside practice management colleagues on operational and strategic developments.
- Support business continuity and emergency planning arrangements.
Clinical Practice
The Clinical Nurse Manager will maintain an appropriate clinical caseload and provide direct patient care in line with qualifications, experience and competency.
Clinical duties may include:
- Running chronic disease management clinics, including:
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- COPD
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular disease
- Cervical cytology and screening.
- Vaccinations and immunisations.
- Health promotion and lifestyle advice.
- NHS Health Checks.
- Wound care and dressings.
- Chronic disease reviews.
- Minor illness assessment and management (where competent).
- Independent prescribing duties (if qualified as an Independent Prescriber).
Quality Improvement and Audit
- Lead and support clinical audits.
- Monitor nursing quality indicators and service performance.
- Analyse clinical data and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support the implementation of recommendations arising from audits and reviews.
- Ensure continuous improvement initiatives are embedded within nursing services.
