Job summary

We are looking for a Salaried GP to join our friendly and supportive team at Walnut Tree Health Centre, working 48 sessions per week.

We are a growing three-Partner practice serving approximately 14,000 patients, with a strong focus on teamwork, mutual support and excellent patient care.

You will work alongside our GP team, experienced nursing and paramedic teams, and our wider Primary Care Network (PCN) team, including physiotherapists, mental health practitioners, social prescribers and clinical pharmacists.

We are looking for a GP who enjoys collaborative working and values being part of a supportive team. You will contribute to shared GP administrative responsibilities alongside your clinical work, with duties shared across the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as a Salaried GP for 48 sessions per week, providing high-quality, safe and effective medical care to our registered patients. You will work as part of our wider clinical team, making effective use of skills and expertise across the practice and PCN.

Main duties include:

  • Conducting face-to-face and telephone consultations.
  • Assessing, diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions.
  • Providing treatment, advice, safety-netting and follow-up.
  • Managing long-term conditions and contributing to preventative care.
  • Making appropriate referrals to secondary, community and primary care services.
  • Working collaboratively with GPs, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and the wider MDT.
  • Supporting continuity of care and communication across the clinical team.
  • Reviewing investigations and taking appropriate clinical action.
  • Completing clinical correspondence and administrative work.
  • Contributing to shared GP administrative responsibilities, including prescription tasks.
  • Participating in practice meetings and service development.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records and working within relevant guidelines.
  • Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and practice development.
  • Supporting a positive, respectful and collaborative working environment.

We are looking for a GP who communicates well, works effectively as part of a team and is willing to share the day-to-day clinical and administrative responsibilities of general practice.

InductionA full induction programme is provided at Walnut Tree Health Centre. When attending any practice within the network, the post holder must also complete that practice's induction programme.

Learning and DevelopmentTraining and development are fundamental to ensuring staff have the appropriate skills, knowledge, attitude and competence to perform their roles.

All staff must complete mandatory training as directed by the training co-ordinator. The post holder is expected to assess their own learning needs and undertake appropriate learning.

The post holder will undertake mentorship for team members and share learning and information to promote good practice and inform colleagues of current and future developments, including courses and conferences.

The post holder will provide an educational role to patients, carers, families and colleagues in an environment that facilitates learning.

Collaborative WorkingAll staff must recognise the importance of collaborative working, understand their own role and scope, and identify how this may develop over time. Staff must prioritise workloads and use effective time management.

Teamwork is essential in a multidisciplinary environment. The post holder must work as an effective and responsible team member, support others, explore new ways of working and work effectively with colleagues to define values, direction and policies affecting care delivery.

Effective communication is essential. Staff must communicate in a way that enables appropriate information sharing.

All staff should delegate clearly and appropriately, following safe practice and assessment of competence. Plans and outcomes by which to measure success should be agreed.

Managing InformationAll staff should use technology and appropriate software to support the planning, implementation and monitoring of care and the presentation and communication of information.

Data should be reviewed and processed using accurate SNOMED/read codes to ensure easy and accurate information retrieval for monitoring and audit.

Service DeliveryStaff will receive detailed information during induction regarding policies and procedures. The post holder must adhere to organisational policies and regional directives and ensure protocols are followed.

SecuritySecurity is the responsibility of all personnel. The post holder must remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately to their line manager.

Door lock codes must never be shared. Restricted areas must remain secured. Password controls must be maintained and passwords must not be shared.

Professional ConductAll staff are required to dress appropriately for their role.

LeaveAll personnel are entitled to take leave. Line managers must ensure staff are given the opportunity to take their allocated annual leave and should encourage staff to take their full entitlement.

Public holidays will be calculated on a pro-rata basis according to hours worked.

Primary Key ResponsibilitiesThe following are the core responsibilities of the Salaried GP. There may occasionally be a requirement to carry out other tasks depending on workload and staffing levels:

  • Deliver highly effective medical care to the entitled population.
  • Provide services commensurate with the GMS contract.
  • Undertake generic prescribing in accordance with local and national guidance.
  • Effectively manage long-term conditions.
  • Process administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests and associated administrative tasks.
  • Undertake telephone triage and duty doctor roles on a rotational basis.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with good practice, policy and guidance.
  • Work collaboratively and accept an equal share of the practice workload.
  • Adhere to best practice recommended through clinical guidelines and the audit process.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives.
  • Accept delegated responsibility for a specific area or areas of QOF.
  • Attend and contribute effectively to practice meetings as required.
  • Contribute effectively to the development and maintenance of the practice, including clinical governance and training.
  • Ensure compliance with the appraisal process.
  • Prepare for and complete the revalidation process.
  • Commit to self-learning and promote an ethos of continuing professional development across the practice team.
  • Support the training of medical students from all clinical disciplines.
  • Support the Partners in achieving the strategic aims of the practice, making recommendations to enhance income and reduce expenditure.
  • Review and adhere to practice protocols and policies.
  • Encourage collaborative working, liaise regularly with all staff and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Secondary ResponsibilitiesIn addition to the primary responsibilities, the Salaried GP may be requested to:

  • Participate in practice audits as requested by the audit lead.
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
  • Participate in the review of significant and near-miss events, applying a structured approach such as root cause analysis (RCA).
