Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science is a pioneering Faculty, dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge and opportunities to ensure that all our students can excel within their chosen discipline.

The School of Computer Science and Mathematics is dedicated to producing research that has real-world application, boasting specialisms in immersive technologies, applications of artificial intelligence, trustworthy computing technologies and data science.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence to join the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI).

Key areas include AI, data science, trustworthy and explainable AI, causal AI, digital twins, immersive technologies, data visualisation and advanced computational modelling.

You will contribute to current AI and data science research programmes and to the development of new externally funded research.

Key activities will include:

Conducting high-quality research in AI and Data Science;

Organising, harmonising and analysing large, multimodal and multi-source datasets;

Developing and evaluating AI methods;

Collaborating with internal and external research partners;

Preparing research papers and conference contributions;

Contributing to external research funding applications; and

Supporting research management and activities within AIDTRI.

You should hold a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, or have submitted your thesis and be awaiting viva.

Essential criteria include experience of conducting and publishing high-quality AI research, strong knowledge of AI algorithms, programming experience in Python, R or similar, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience with large and complex AI problems, novel AI or computational methods, advanced Python programming, and research funding proposals would be advantageous.

You should demonstrate in your supporting statement how you meet all essential criteria in the person specification, providing specific evidence and examples for each criterion. Evidence against the desirable criteria should be provided where applicable.

We anticipate holding interviews the first week of October 2026.

Further information about AIDTRI is available at: www.ljmu.ac.uk/research/centres-and-institutes/artificial-intelligence-and-digital-technologies-research-institute

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Ivan Olier, Head of AIDTRI, at [email protected].

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction, and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
