The Highways Maintenance Service maintains and repairs over 500 miles of road and 800 miles of footpaths within Leicester City. We undertake construction of major public realm schemes to improve the pedestrian and transport network within the City Centre, as well as providing winter service and gully cleaning services in the city.
Join us as a Drainage/ Logistics Operative to work with a team of highway professionals, carrying out cleansing of gullies, sewers, and watercourses, as well as general manual/labouring tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways. You’ll also assist with the minor construction, maintenance, and repair of the highway infrastructure - roads, footpaths, and drainage features.
Based at our offices at 90 Leycroft Road, you’ll work on site anywhere within the city and occasionally further afield. It is essential you have a Class 1 or 2 HGV licence to carry out this role.
This is a full-time, permanent working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. However, you will be required to work alternative hours during the night during the winter months (October to April), i.e. when on gritting duties. You must also be able to work overtime to suit the operational needs of the unit, e.g. additional weekday hours and weekend working.
This is a career graded post (LG Band 04 – LG Band 05) and hours are paid at enhanced rate (time and a third for weekend working and any night working, i.e. between the hours of midnight and 5.00am). Appointment to a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidate. Dependent on availability of work/vacancy at a higher level, progress will be by satisfactory performance, agreed at annual Appraisals and through on-going supervision.
What you’ll be doing:
As a Drainage/ Logistics Operative and seasonal night worker, you’ll carry out gully cleansing and/ or general highway/ drainage construction and repair activities. You will be required to assist other skilled staff as required, which may include undertaking deep excavation works, lay sewer/ drainage pipes and construct chambers, drainage investigation work, repairs, and maintenance. You’ll confidently use power-assisted tools, minor plant, and machinery as well as drive, clean and carry out routine maintenance of vehicles. You’ll plan and prioritise work activities to ensure the productivity targets are achieved, whilst ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements such as Health & Safety, Works Specifications. During the winter period (October to April) you’ll be required to carry out gritting activities at night as directed by your Supervisor, to a specified route on the highway network.
What you’ll need
You’ll have experience as a Drainage/ Logistics Operative or in another similar role in construction industry with a good understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements and safe working procedures. You’ll have working knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction, and workmanship requirements in different disciplines. You’ll be able to follow instructions and complete relevant paperwork such as timesheets and worksheets. Using good communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll be able to deal effectively with customers as well as work colleagues.
