Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to join the Occupational Therapy Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. You will be responsible for managing your own patient caseload, carrying out assessments, planning and delivering appropriate interventions, and evaluating outcomes within a clinical team or group setting. You will use your professional knowledge to develop problem lists and goal-focused treatment plans, maintaining accurate documentation in line with departmental requirements, while working under the guidance of Senior Occupational Therapists and supporting ongoing professional and service development.

Main duties of the job

As an Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for supporting Senior Occupational Therapy staff with the development of new procedures and evidence-based approaches. You will be responsible for applying guidance from senior therapy staff to strengthen your clinical skills and knowledge. You will be responsible for ensuring patient-related records are comprehensive, accurate and evaluative, in accordance with professional, legal, departmental and Trust requirements. You will also be responsible for sharing relevant information with patients, colleagues, relatives and other service providers through appropriate written and verbal communication. The role will require you to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, using effective persuasion, motivation, negotiation and reassurance skills when required.

Job description

  • To demonstrate appropriate communication strategies when supporting patients, carers and colleagues where barriers may be present, including language differences, the use of interpreters, environmental noise or limited privacy.
  • To carry out safe manual handling of patients and equipment following appropriate training, while applying organisational policies and procedures to minimise risk during patient-related activities.
  • To carry out practical therapeutic techniques such as patient transfers, passive joint movements and splint fabrication, ensuring interventions are undertaken safely and within the required level of competence.
  • To oversee the appropriate use and availability of Occupational Therapy equipment, including providing instruction, training and supervision to colleagues to promote safe and effective equipment use.
  • To contribute to the education and development of staff and students through supervision, delegated activities, clinical teaching, tutorials and participation in relevant departmental learning opportunities.
  • To support effective service delivery through discharge planning, quality assurance activities, data collection, audit participation, continuing professional development, performance review and adherence to health and safety requirements.
