Job summary

Wye Valley NHS Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant to join the Gastroenterology and Hepatology team at Hereford County Hospital on a 12-month fixed term basis.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly, supportive and well-established service within a progressive District General Hospital. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team and contribute to the delivery of high-quality Gastroenterology and Hepatology services across inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy settings.

The services are well-developed with an established team of Consultant Gastroenterologists & Hepatologists, Specialist Registrars, Resident Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Physician Associates, and more. The department has developed a number of nurse-led and consultant-supervised services.

The department provides a comprehensive range of Gastroenterology and Hepatology diagnostic and therapeutic services.

The post will provide a varied clinical role, with opportunities to undertake inpatient Consultant of the Week responsibilities, outpatient clinics and endoscopy, alongside participation in the GI Bleed on-call rota. The existing Consultant of the week and GI bleed arrangements operate on a 1:8 basis. There is no mandatory Acute Medicine on-call commitment associated with the role.

The precise duties and job plan for the locum appointment will be agreed with the successful candidate accordingly.

Main duties of the job

The successful Consultant Gastroenterologist will provide high-quality specialist clinical care to patients referred to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology service at Hereford County Hospital.

The main duties of the post will include;

• Providing Consultant-level clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with Gastroenterology conditions.
• Participating in the Gastroenterology Consultant of the Week service, providing senior clinical leadership and decision-making for inpatients.
• Undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy in accordance with the candidate's experience, competencies and agreed clinical commitments.
• Participating in the GI Bleed on-call rota, including the assessment and management of patients requiring urgent endoscopic intervention, such as patients presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Providing specialist advice through the department's electronic Advice & Guidance and referral triage services, where included within the agreed job plan.
• Reviewing investigation results and undertaking associated clinical correspondence and administration.
• Contributing to safe and effective patient pathways, ensuring appropriate investigation, treatment, follow-up and referral.
• Supporting the education and supervision of junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals where appropriate.
• Work in accordance with Wye Valley NHS Trust policies, procedures and clinical governance arrangements.

The Consultant Gastroenterologist will provide specialist clinical services within the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at Hereford County Hospital for a 12-month fixed term Locum Consultant appointment.

The post holder will work as part of the established Consultant team and will be expected to provide safe, effective and timely clinical care across inpatient, outpatient, endoscopy and emergency Gastroenterology services.
