Posted 21 August 2026 Closing date 13 September 2026

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £42,252. With potential progression once in post to £47,389 a year.

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to April 2029

Description of the Group

As Research Fellow in chemical biology you will join an EPSRC-funded team focused on developing and exploiting new tools to understand and perturb protein-nucleic acid interactions. You will assist Professor Andy Wilson and the collaborative team in delivering this research project focussing on the development and application of screening methods (e.g. phage and/or mRNA) to identify L-peptide ligands for mirror image nucleic acids and then using the corresponding enantiomeric D-peptide ligands to perturb functionally relevant protein/nucleic acid interactions. You will hold, or prior to taking up the appointment secure, a PhD level degree (or near to completion) in chemical biology or relevant allied discipline, together with practical experience of peptide/peptidomimetic ligand discovery and development.

Person Specification

The post is associated with a grant led by Professor Andy Wilson, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), and bringing together the University of Birmingham (Jim Tucker and Tim Knowles), the University of Bath (Scott Lovell).

You will be a member of the Chemistry for Biodiscovery and Medicine section within the School of Chemistry and have a close interaction with the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. There will be opportunities to participate in Secondments to Bath as part of the project. The School of Chemistry is a vibrant, dynamic place to work with a thriving academic community comprising over 110 academic and research staff, 20 professional services staff and over 600 students. We provide an inclusive and supportive environment where we strive to support every member of staff in realising their career potential. We have ambitious plans to expand our research activity and are in an exciting period of growth: major investment from the University has delivered a state-of-the-art molecular sciences research building which opened in 2023. This investment builds on a major recent expansion of our academic staff and investment in our teaching and learning provision, with our Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, which opened September 2018, already revolutionising how we teach undergraduate practical chemistry.
